This Year's Model Updates:

More power for the 4.7-liter V8 and three new trim levels (SE, Sport and Overland) are on tap for this year. Also, several important safety and convenience options such as side curtain airbags, power-adjustable pedals, a tire-pressure monitoring system and automatic windshield wipers debut this year.

Pros:
  • Powerful 4.7-liter V8, all-terrain capability, roomy comfort for four.
Cons:
  • Noisy and unrefined, questionable reliability.

  • Disappointed - 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Still bought the car as it was my first serious buy ever. SO far, replaced front axle seals($800), transmission at 75k($2600), rear axle seals($800), front and rear wheel bearings($600), all around rotors and pads at 90k($500), valve cover gasket and oil pan gasket.

  • Electrical problems - 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Shortly after the 36k mile warranty (37400 miles to be exact) the AC blend doors failed and that will require a $2000 repair; we have also had several electrical problems that come and go. Last week the gauges all started jumping before the key was put into the ignition. None of these problems are covered of course. We really like the looks and how comfortable Grand Cherokee is but the quality is very poor. We have two Mercedes that are of much better quality and Im afraid that this will be our last American designed automobile.

  • Would not buy this vehicle - 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

I bought the vehicle new in 2002. Did not take long to start experiencing problems. From what I was told this was the year they decided to make changes. One in particular they used non adjustable ball joints. This led to my vehicle pulling to the right which in turn cupped my tires. Dealer replaced ball joints but would not replace tires. Poor design in duct work. There is ample airflow from left side but barely non on right (passenger side). Was told this was by design. Had issue with AC not working, had to take to dealership several times before it was corrected. Drivers seat frame broke in two places. This happened just as vehicle was out of warranty. Replaced at my cost.

  • An experience - 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Bought it with 39k miles. Replaced entire tranny at 65k(cost 2600). Replaced pads and rotors once, due again. Replaced front axle at 48k. Replaced entire front end at 85k. Replaced front and real axl seals at 90k, along with valve cover gasket and oil pan gasket. Replaced throttle body sensor 5k miles ago which restricted me from a NYS inspectio. Bad on gas. Good in snow unless you are on an unmarked road, then nothing special. Very comy inside. Awesome Jeep turning radius. Good looks inside and outside. Motor runs strong though would have preferred a V8 had I known better. Evac recall for all 2002s will hurt you if you want an inspection, need to have that fixed. Poor sell-back value.

  • Save your money and buy something else! - 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

It looks great and is fun to drive when it is working but that is not very often. I have had mine in the shop (all covered under warranty) 6 times in the first 9 mo. with problems from a leak in the fire wall that let rain water flood in to the drivers area to the transmission jerking every 10-15 sec at highway speeds.

  • Check Engine again? - 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

I purchased this vehicle as a "certified used vehicle." I also got the extended warranty just in case. What I got was a certified piece of [expletive deleted]. In the little over month and a half that I have had the vehicle, the service engine light has come on for the 4th time (today) and the transmission still hunts for gears while accelerating (basically it cant decide if it wants to shift down or not, or just shifts down too early.) This weekend Im trading it in. I got in over my head with this piece of junk and Im worse for the wear, but Ill take the hit to get rid of it. As much fun as SUVs are I believe Im going back to a car.

I have had more problems with my Jeep than with any other vehicle I have owned.

  • Lots of problems - 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

The first 36K miles went OK with only one warranty repair. The rear bumper was replaced (It turned a greenish color!). The crappy Goodyear Wangler tires wore out prematurely and I put Michelin LTXs on. The car handles much better and with less tire noise. The problems started at about 40K. First the drivers side window broke. (The dealer told me that this is very common). Next the circuit board in both tail/brake lights burnt out and the assemblies needed to be replaced. (Once again a very common problem). Next the passenger side window motor broke and the window dropped into the door. (Another very common problem). Now the car has a vacuum leak in the brake booster. My least reliable car.

  • Gas Pumps become tourist destinations - 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

First off, we bought this car brand new and drove it to the grave (totaled in an accident). So with that said, I feel now that its gone I can write this. The car ran perfectly to 100k. Never had a single mechanical error other than the AC failing 2 times. Car was fun to drive, could go anywhere. But it was slower than molasses. The V6 just simply didnt move the car. The gas mileage stunk. I averaged 13 city 15 highway. Still though I had a lot of great times in the car, and really nothing much went wrong. If gas ever drops in price I would get another.

  • JEEP is a piece of junk - 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

I purchased a 6 cyl 4WD JGC Laredo last year - I sold it with 17,500 miles on it. Nothing but problems, front brake rotors had to be resurfaced twice, fuel pump had to be replaced, passenger electric window motor went out, etc... Serious defects with a vehicle that cost $28,000. I also have a toyota tacoma - the exception being that this vehicle has 152,000 miles on it and still going strong. Until Jeep fixes these quality defects - I would be very hesitant when buying another Jeep vehicle - just talk with others who have owned a Jeep Grand Cherokee.
